How We Review Slots

Compatibility

We always take a good look at how slots play across every device, from desktop, to mobile and tablet. You should be able to enjoy the slot seamlessly across all, and ideally in both portrait and landscape mode. We check different mobile devices, including software and screen sizes.

Bonuses

We look at bonus rounds as well as any in-game features and interactivity like free spins, wilds and re-spins. We want to see exciting bonus rounds with plenty of chances to win and there’s a better score if there’s multiple rounds to enjoy.

Graphics

Some slots will have a more traditional feel to them, but they should still be well designed and themed. It doesn’t need to be all singing and dancing with flashing lights, but it should look like something worth playing on.

Gaming Experience

This is harder to put a specific criteria on, but in a nutshell, we consider how enjoyable the slot is. Is it fun, well designed and enjoyable? Is it clear what the paylines are and how to enjoy the game? We want to make sure a slot is a good quality one.

RTP & Volatility

Every single slot plays differently and preferences will vary, but we will, naturally, like to see a higher RTP as it increases the chances of player wins. We prefer high volatility/variance slots, but this completely depends on the player.

Other Features

We take a look at the reels and paylines and analyse how the game plays. We’ll also look at the value of the symbols and any re-spins, plus any other in-game features to ensure they’re all up to scratch for the ultimate gaming experience.

What is RTP in Slots?

When it comes to online slots, you’ll see the words ‘return to player percentage’, or RTP a lot. In short, it is the amount the slot pays out, and the higher the number the better. The important thing to understand is that this does not mean how much of your stake you as an individual will get back, it’s calculated as an accumulative total of all stakes. Most slots range from 95% upwards, with the highest being around 99%.

When claiming a casino bonus, always be sure to check the terms and conditions as there are often limitations as to which games count towards wagering. Some of the highest RPT slots online are normally always excluded.

Types of Slot Games

Video Slots

Video slots are the games of the 21st century. There are so many to choose from, with themes including your favourite tv shows, board games and even musicians. These slots describe the exciting and interactive type of game with bonus rounds, in-game features and a great overall playing casino. A real favourite with casino players.

Examples

Jackpot Slots

These are the kind of slots that can change your life. Ranging from modest jackpots of around £10,000 to huge sums of money, sometimes over £1,000,000, they come in all shapes and sizes. One thing these games do have in common is that with every spin, you could land the prize and walk away with a huge payout.

Examples

Megaways Slots

Megaways is a very unique type of slot, and you’ll either love it or hate it. Absolutely packed with paylines, they range between 4,000 and 17,000 different ways to win. The symbols explode and create cascading combinations that can seriously increase your payout, but they’re an acquired taste.

Examples

Classic Slots

These are the more traditional 3 reel 5 row slots that do very little than just spin. Picture 7’s, cherries and bars, and you’ve got a classic slot. Normally relatively high on RTP,  these games don’t need the additional features that others have, and many players just enough a good old fashioned slot machine.

Volatility and Variance in Slots

As well as RTP, another important element of slots is their volatility, sometimes known as variance. These come in 2 main types, low volatility and high. The volatility of a slot dictates how it plays, including the frequency of payouts.

High to medium volatility slots are the best option for bigger spenders with a larger bankroll and looking for a bigger win. If you just enjoy the playing and stake low, then low volatility is likely to work better for you.

Here we have outlined the key differences between slots with differing volatility so that you know what to expect when you play. Remember, lower volatility slots are better for wagering as the wins will be smaller but more frequent, giving you a better chance of meeting turnover requirements.

High Volatility

Low Volatility

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Slots are powered by a random number generator and there’s nobody controlling who or who doesn’t win. This is regularly checked by the UK Gambling Commission.

This completely depends on how you like to play slots. A high volatility slot with a high RTP is likely to be more thrilling than a low volatility slot with a low RTP.

New casinos are likely to have been designed with mobile devices in mind, and will have technology in the background to help with speed and overall experience. With an older casino, you’re getting an established and well-known name, but you may not find the site as enjoyable.

Yes, but it’s completely random. There’s no technique to winning, it’s purely luck, but you certainly can win.

The slots that are more likely to get you through wagering requirements are low variance slots. These have more frequent wins so you’re going to make your balance last longer.

A slot with a very high RTP such as 98% and above will often be excluded from wagering as there’s no house edge.

No. The highest RTP slot is 99%, there are no slots that will offer you a 100% return to player. There’s got to be something in it for the operator too!

Some table games have better odds, such as BlackJack. The issue here is that you’ll need to stake more to win more. Whether you prefer tables or slots completely depends on your personal preferences.
